Catch of the Day – Every Day at Phillips

It all started as a family fishing and processing business 100 years ago in Hoopers Island, Maryland. A.E. Phillips and his son would supply wild crabs, fish, and oysters from the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore restaurants and fishmongers every day by steamship. In 1956, the family opened their first Phillips Seafood Restaurant in Ocean City, Maryland. Today, Phillips has expanded to many new locations including Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Atlantic City. Regardless of the location - airport food courts, casinos, or full-service restaurants - Phillips sticks to its long-standing family principles: serve classic seafood favorites, provide outstanding service, and create a memorable dining experience for their guests.

     For the last 10 years, Phillips in Atlantic City has been part of that culinary history serving up lunch and dinner options just like its sister locations. What makes Phillips in AC so special is no doubt its location. Situated in The Playground at Caesars Pier, Phillips AC offers guests upscale dining as well as an interactive dining experience with their open exhibition kitchen. And, from its third-floor vantage point, guests not only get fine quality food, but stunning views of the beach and Boardwalk while dining or having a cocktail.

     In a hurry with no time for a sit-down meal? No problem, you can get some of your Phillips favorites right on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at the Phillips Seafood Shack in the front of The Playground Pier. Order and go for some fast but yummy signature items including seafood soups, seafood baskets, and crab cake sandwiches along with fruity frozen drinks to keep you cool on the beach and the Boardwalk.

     Although Phillips is deep-rooted in tradition, new and exciting menu items are always being added to the menu. Michelle Torres, Corporate Director of Marketing for Phillips Seafood Restaurant, sees their most recent menu additions as a plus for guests and chef alike. According to Torres, “The Chefs Features section of the menu gives our chef an opportunity to be creative and offer our guests a variety.”

     So, what’s on the new Chef Features menu? The Spicy Shrimp, fried shrimp tossed in a spicy garlic sauce and served over coleslaw, makes for a nice addition to the tried and true menu. If you can’t decide between surf or turf options, Phillips now offers two new combinations like the Ultimate Chicken Chesapeake – a panko crusted chicken breast topped with shrimp, lobster, crab, bacon, tomato, asparagus and parmesan cream sauce accompanied with tri-color potatoes. If you’re more of a traditional surf & turf eater, try the Steak & Crab – a 6 oz. pub sirloin plus a Hoopers Island crab cake served with Yukon mashed potatoes and asparagus.

     In addition to new menu choices, Phillips offers special nights and promotions all year round starting with Happy Hour every day where guests can partake in some delicious appetizers and special prices on beer, wine, and cocktails! Other specials range from a Mother’s Day brunch to Crabs for Grads (though June 30) to Half Price Bottles of wine on Thursdays. Exclusively featured at the Atlantic City location, Phillips offers a Surf & Turf special where the chef will prepare a 6 oz. broiled lobster tail and a tender 6 oz. top sirloin - cooked just the way you like it for $19.95.

     If you are in the mood for clams and all the fixings that go with it, any day of the year, nothing tops the Clam Bake for Two special at Phillips. Your seafood feast includes two whole lobsters, snow crab legs, steamed shrimp, clams, mussels, potatoes, and corn on the cob. You will definitely get your hands dirty, but don’t worry because the Clam Bake for Two comes complete with lobster bibs to catch all the hot drawn butter that is generously available for dipping.

     Phillips restaurants take pride in serving quality seafood, and their commitment to excellence and consistency is not a secret. Over the years, the restaurants have been recognized by many publications and business journals racking up numerous accolades and awards. For example, Casino Player Magazine voted Phillips as Best Seafood in the Best Dining & Nightlife category.

     Being recognized by trade journals is flattering, but nothing is better than great endorsements from pleased and satiated guests. For example, Northfield, New Jersey resident Ron Gaskill enjoys a walk by the beach and a good meal. Gaskill sums up how Phillips is his go-to-spot, “When I’m walking the Boardwalk and looking for a bite, nothing beats a bowl of Phillips’ clam chowder – chock-full of clams and authentic flavor – and right on the AC boardwalk.”
